Cultural exchange with a French-immersion primary school in Ghana

For a French immersion primary school in Ghana, I designed an interactive lesson to their specifications to teach children about:
- The history and geography of the province of Quebec
- Some winter vocabulary (since winter is an unfamiliar concept to them!)
Background
Les Passerelles Globale is Montréal nonprofit that helps immigrants from Ghana settle in and integrate into Québec society. They maintain a partnership with a French-immersion primary school back in Ghana, and wanted a module that would teach 1st through 3rd graders a little bit about the province. But because it was for kids, it not only had to be engaging and fun, it also had to incorporate design principles for non-natives speakers who may not yet be strong readers.
Considerations
Cultural sensitivity: a narrator that looks like them, but dressed for the weather in QuebecAppropriate assessment: activities and knowledge checks need to be low-stakes and easy to follow without a lot of directions (drag-and-drop quizzes with multiple tries allowed)Fun, childish interaction: design items such as cartoon maps and falling snowflakes, and activities like a paper doll activity to test their comprehension of clothing items
The result
This project provided valuable experience in thinking though design problems and working with a real client. Plus it was fun testing it out on my own children, who were also learning French in their immersion class!
